Champaign-Urbana – International Walk ‘n Roll to School Day will be held Wednesday, October 5th. This international event is held annually on the first Wednesday of October in 40 different countries and thousands of schools across the U.S. The C-U event will see the participation of thousands of students and parents walking and biking to school that day in Champaign and Urbana. Local schools will be holding parades to school, Drop 'n Walk events for bus riders, among other planned activities. Students and parents will be joined by local officials, U of I Student Athletes, local bike club members, and local celebrities.
The benefits of walking and biking to school extend way beyond increasing physical activity. It also helps decrease congestion surrounding schools, increases overall emphasis on correct pedestrian and bicycle safety throughout the community, decreases emissions surrounding the schools, and even improves student behavior and performance within the classroom!
This is event is sponsored by the C-U Safe Routes to School Project, Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District, City of Urbana, City of Champaign, Urbana Public Schools, Champaign Public Schools, Champaign County Regional Planning Commission, and the University of Illinois.
